Can teaching- and researching staff borrow items for more than 4 weeks?
Not yet. The library do acknowledge, however, that teaching- and researching staff may have need for an extended lending period from time to time. We are therefore working to come up with a system that allows this group of users to take out loans for an extended period of time.

Why doesn't the library have longer opening hours?
The current opening hours of the library is a compromise between library ressources and user needs. We have tried, several times, to expand the opening hours of the library, but the results have not been positive. Too few of our users took advantage of the extended opening hours.
In the course of the next year, the library will work on the possibility of a self-service library with around the 'clock access for students of the Aarhus School of Architecture.

What do I do, if I lose an item?
If you lose an item, it is important, that you notify the library as quickly as possible. This way, you'll avoid any unneccessary fees, and the library can begin the process of re-acquiring the item in question. As you are personally liable for borrowed items, you must pay the cost of re-acquisition.

Why aren't reminders sent out until 3 days before items are due?
The timing of the reminders is set according to what works best in practice. Reminders should be sent out in good time of course, but on the other hand, reminders shouldn't be sent out so early that you forget to return the items anyway. Experience shows that a three day limit is what works best for most people.

Do I run the risk of having to return items when the library is closed?
No. The library's systems are configured so that lending periods will not expire on weekends, holidays or closing days.

Why are fees already charged on the first day that items are overdue?
The short answer: To help ensure that library items are returned on time, so the library can maintain a good level of service towards you, as well as the next loaner. In addition, timely returns ensure a better overall circulation of the library's collection.
The long answer: Until the 1st of February 2008, the library didn't charge fees until items had been overdue for more than seven days. Unfortunately, this period of time was widely regarded by many of the library's users as an extra (free) week in which items could be kept.
The normal lending period for a book is four weeks. The normal lending period for a journal is two weeks. The unfortunate perception of the then present fees, had the effect that lending periods in practice often increased to five and three weeks respectively - an increase of 25 and 50 percent. This in turn, meant that potential annual loans for a book decreased from 12 to 9, and potential annual loans for a journal decreased from 24 to 16.
Aggregated towards the total annual loans of the library, this factual increase in lending times led to a huge decrease in the circulation of the library's collection, and led to unacceptable delays in execution of reservations. The present fee system, therefore, is designed to ensure a better level of service and an increased circulation of library items.

What is the rationale behind the fee rates?
The fees are intended to ensure timely return of items. This is why the first rate is so high as to be noticeable, and this is why the second rate, which is charged after a week, is a relatively steep increase. For the same reason, the third rate, which is charged after 30 days, isn't a significant increase.
The rates of the library fees are set within the framework of Lov om Biblioteksvirksomhed (the law that governs library activity in Denmark) §21 and §28.

Can I pay fees online?

What does blacklisting mean?
Blacklisting means, that you may no longer take out loans, make reservations or renew library items.
Why am I blacklistet?
You are blacklistet if you owe more than 200 DKK in fees, or if you repeatedly fail to return borrowed material. Blacklisting is lifted upon payment of fees.
